Islas Revillagigedo

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2021 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Red-billed Tropicbird Phaethon aethereus LC breeding (2017) 410 individuals A2, A4, B3a
Laysan Albatross Phoebastria immutabilis NT breeding (2017) 67 individuals B1a
Townsend's Shearwater Puffinus auricularis CR resident (2015) 27 individuals A1, A4, B3a
Clarion Wren Troglodytes tanneri VU resident (2017) 163 individuals A1, A2
Socorro Wren Troglodytes sissonii NT resident (2017) 147 individuals B1a
Socorro Mockingbird Mimus graysoni CR resident (2017) 21 individuals A1, A2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2021. The most recent assessment (2022) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2022 unfavourable very high high
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Shrubland poor (40-69%) good (> 90%) unfavourable
Grassland good (> 90%) good (> 90%) favourable
Forest good (> 90%) good (> 90%) favourable
Marine Coastal/Supratidal good (> 90%) good (> 90%) favourable

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now whole area/population (>90%) very rapid to severe deterioration very high
Climate change and severe weather likely in long term (beyond 4 years) whole area/population (>90%) very rapid to severe deterioration high
Geological events likely in long term (beyond 4 years) majority/most of area/population (50-90%) very rapid to severe deterioration high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now small area/few individuals (<10%) slow but significant deterioration low
Transportation and service corridors likely in short term (within 4 years) small area/few individuals (<10%) slow but significant deterioration low
Residential and commercial development likely in long term (beyond 4 years) small area/few individuals (<10%) no or imperceptible deterioration low
Energy production and mining likely in long term (beyond 4 years) small area/few individuals (<10%) no or imperceptible deterioration low
Biological resource use past (and unlikely to return) and no longer limiting small area/few individuals (<10%) no or imperceptible deterioration low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area of site (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species The conservation measures needed for the site are being comprehensively and effectively implemented high
