Islands in Smålandshavet, north of Lolland


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A shallow sea area with several cultivated and inhabitated islands and some uninhabited islets with forest, reedbeds and saltmarshes. The majority of forest is plantation, however, tiny but valuable patches of old-growth forest occur. Marine areas surrounding this IBA (and previously included within it following Grimmett and Jones 1989) are included in Smålandsfarvandet (site 118).



Key biodiversity
Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Philomachus pugnax, Sterna hirundo, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Several smaller areas have additional protection.



Protected areas
National None International High4,390 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Fejø and Femø Isles (waters south-east of), 32,640 ha). 4,390 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Smålandshavet north of Lolland, 41,680 ha).
