The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Land ownership
En la actualidad, las islas no se encuentran bajo ninguna figura legal de protección. Sin embargo, hacen parte de los resguardos indígenas de Mocagua, Macedonia, El Vergel y Zaragoza, y sus habitantes tienen intenciones de conservar la biodiversidad allí encontrada.
