Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuary and surroundings

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2004 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Green Peafowl Pavo muticus EN resident (2004) present A1
Greylag Goose Anser anser LC non-breeding (2004) present A4i
Baer's Pochard Aythya baeri CR winter (2004) present A1
Purple Swamphen Porphyrio porphyrio LC resident (2004) present A4i
Sarus Crane Grus antigone VU - (2004) present A1
Lesser Adjutant Leptoptilos javanicus NT resident (2004) present A1
Spot-billed Pelican Pelecanus philippensis NT non-breeding (2004) present A1, A4i
Oriental Darter Anhinga melanogaster LC resident (2004) present A4i
White-rumped Vulture Gyps bengalensis CR non-breeding (2004) present A1
Pallas's Fish-eagle Haliaeetus leucoryphus EN resident (2004) present A1

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2004. The most recent assessment (2013) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2013 moderate high medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Sarus Crane Grus antigone 2 / 2 (birds) 100 not assessed
Lesser Adjutant Leptoptilos javanicus 1 / 1 (birds) 100 not assessed
White-rumped Vulture Gyps bengalensis 20 / 20 (birds) 100 not assessed
Slender-billed Vulture Gyps tenuirostris 9 / 9 (birds) 100 not assessed
Pallas's Fish-eagle Haliaeetus leucoryphus 2 / 2 (birds) 100 not assessed

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest good (>90%) moderate (70–90%) moderate

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Pollution happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity medium
