Ilhéus do Rombo


Site description (2022 baseline):

Site location and context
Rombo Islets group is composed by a group of 5 islet: Grande (2.5 km²), Luis Carneiro, Rei and Sapado islets which are smaller 0.25 km² and Cima that is the main islet in terms of biodiversity presence. Cima is a rocky flat islet with 1.5 km² and a small hill (~77 m high) on the southern side, with 22 small beaches and Rocky areas form small tidal pools and some flat intertidal zones. The small beaches show a variation of white and black sand on the Est and West side of the islet

Key biodiversity

22 species of non-marine birds identified, four of which are endemic to Cape Verde: Apus alexandri, Bubulcus ibis, Egretta garzetta, Charadrius hiaticula, Pluvialis dominica, Pluvialis squatarola, Pluvialis squatarola, Falco alexandri, Falco peregrinus, Delichon urbicum, Larus fuscus, Pandion haliaetus, Passer iagoensis, Coturnix coturnix, Arenaria interpres, Calidris alba, Calidris ferrugínea, Numenius phaeopus Tringa nebularia, Tringa totanus, Sylvia atricapila, Tyto alba detorta; 21 endemic plant species identified, including 4 Cape Verde endemics – Kickixias elegans, Periploca chavaleri, Lotus brunneri, Limonium braunni; About 6800 nests of Caretta caretta in the 2021 season; 4 endemic species of terrestrial reptiles with the highlight being the largest lizard of Cape Verde, Chioninia vaillantii. All the submerged biodiversity around the islets is still little known.
