Hutan Samarinda-Balikpapan


Site description (2003 baseline):

Site location and context
This area is located between Balikpapan and Samarinda and has been damaged by forest fire. Beside that, exotic species introduction and conversion for agriculture, mainly pepper, present in this area. There is Orang Utan Rehabilitation Research Centre in Wanariset. Although the area have low conservation value, but it has been reported that important species from Wanariset and Wain River are present (see Holmes 1997), including some common species that usually unrecord at low altitude.



Key biodiversity
The vulnerable Crestless Fireback Lophura erythropthalma recorded on this site. Other species possibly live in this site (Holmes 1997) are Bornean Bristlehead Pityriasis gymnocephala, Striped Wren-babbler Kenopia striata, White-bellied Yuhinia Yuhinia zantholeuca, Verditer Flycatcher Eumyias thalassina and Bornean Blue-flycatcher Cyornis superbus.



Habitat and land use
It very difficult to calculate habitat proportion in this area, but the main habitat is lowland evergreen forest, and there is logging area with secondary forest, damaged area by forest fire, agriculture, and probably mangrove forest along of Wain River.This area is used for nature conservation, watershed management, forest research centre, orang utan rehabilitation, wood industry, agriculture and peppers plantation.

Forest fires, road and industrial area development at Wain River forest.



Protected areas
Part of the area is covered by Bukit Soeharto Recreation Forest (61850 ha) which is declared based on SK. 270/Kpts-II/1991. The other area under Inhutani, with natural or plantation forest. Bukit Bangkihai and station of Orang Utan rehabilitation under Tropenbos at Research area.
