Site location and context
Located around 50 km north of Medan, this site includes Gunung Sibayak in the north and Tanjung Barus.
Last ornithological survey confirmed the existence of rare bird such as Short-tailed Frogmouth
Batrachostomus poliolophus, Salvadori's Nightjar
Caprimulgus pulchellus, Sumatran Cochoa
Cochoa beccarii. Schneider's Pitta
Pitta schneideri and Black-crowned Pitta
Pitta venusta in this area.
Lower mountain forest covered most of slope mountain (Anon 1995)

Declare as Bukit Barisan Grand Forest Park based on Keppres No. 48/1988 on 29 November 1988 covering area of 51600 ha. This area includes:- Langkat Selatan Wildlife Sanctuary (13000 ha)- Sibolangit Nature Reserve (120 ha)- Sinambung Protected Forest (13448 ha)- Simancit I & II Protected Forest (11455 ha)- Sibayak I & II Protected Forest - Lau Debuk Recreation Park (7 ha)- Sibolangit Recreation Park (24.85 ha)- Camping ground area (200 ha)- Tongkoh/Bandar Baru Arboretum (250 ha)(FAO 1982, Anon 1995)
