Site location and context
Huanglian Shan is located in the central part of Lüchun County, in south-eastern Yunnan. It is an extension of the Ailao Shan mountain ranges. The nature reserve is 10 km from east to west, and 26 km from north to south. Most of the IBA is between 1,300 m and 2,200 m, and has prominent mountains and valleys. The main habitat type is primary subtropical broadleaf evergreen forest.
Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected plants include Tetracentron sinense, Burretiodendron hsienmu and Alsophila spinulosa. Animals include Neofelis nebulosa, Panthera tigris, Hylobates concolor, Macaca assamensis, Capricornis sumatraensis and Cervus unicolor.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as a provincial-level nature reserve (13,935 ha) in 1983, and upgraded to a national nature reserve (65,058 ha) in 2003.
