Site summary
The mosaic mountain country of Horná Orava consists mainly of spruce monocultures with sporadic spruce virgin forests. Bogs, wet meadows and other wetland types are present in wet spruce-pine forests. The large Orava Dam has well-preserved, predominantly shallow banks. The most common habitats are coniferous forests and agricultural land with meadows and pastures. The area is used mainly for forestry and animal grazing, but also for tourism, hunting and sport fishing activities. The area is important for many birds of the coniferous forest, as well as those of mountainous and sub- mountainous areas with a prevalence of pastures and a number of wetlands. Orava Dam is an important stop-over site for migrating water birds. Intensive forestry is the most serious threat to birds. The site is proposed as an SPA.
