Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A shallow brackish water arm of the Limfjord, separated from the main fjord by a road embankment and bordered by coastal saltmarshes and agricultural areas.
The most recent data available for many non-breeding birds date from 1987 and 1988 when more than 20,000 waterbirds occurred at the site.
Philomachus pugnax and
Recurvirostra avosetta, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, bred at the IBA in 1983.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Since 1991 the intake of salt and brackish water has been increased in order to restore salinity.

International High4,260 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Hjarbæk Fjord and Simested å, 4,260 ha).
