Hirfanlı Reservoir

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2004 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala EN winter (-) 25–122 birds A1, B1i
Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea LC passage (-) 850–2,070 birds A4i, B1i
Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina LC winter (-) 596–3,560 birds A4i, B1i
Common Pochard Aythya ferina VU winter (-) 9,915–13,430 birds B1i
Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula LC winter (-) 2,170–14,550 birds B1i
Eurasian Coot Fulica atra LC winter (-) 21,207–68,350 birds A4i, B1i
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a winter (-) 23,435–133,809 birds A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2004. The most recent assessment (2016) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2016 good medium low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) good (>90%) good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Pollution happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Biological resource use happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place low
