Henderson Island

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2006 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Henderson Island Fruit-dove Ptilinopus insularis VU resident (1987–1992) 3,140–3,420 birds A1, A2
Henderson Island Crake Zapornia atra VU resident (1987–1992) 3,240–6,200 birds A1, A2
Kermadec Petrel Pterodroma neglecta LC breeding (1991) 10,000 pairs A4ii
Herald Petrel Pterodroma heraldica LC breeding (1991) 11,100 pairs A4ii
Henderson Petrel Pterodroma atrata EN breeding (1991–1992) 16,000 pairs A1, A4ii
Bristle-thighed Curlew Numenius tahitiensis NT winter (1991–1992) max 50 birds A1
Gygis alba NR breeding (1991) max 10,000 pairs A4i
Henderson Lorikeet Vini stepheni VU resident (1987) 720–1,820 birds A1, A2

A4iii Species group - seabirds n/a breeding (1991) 37,100 pairs A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2006. The most recent assessment (2013) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2013 not assessed high medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes unset unknown

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity medium
