Helme reservoir Berga-Kelbra


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A storage lake used for water management since 1967, sometimes dry in winter. It is surrounded by grassland with reeds Phragmites, scrub, and alluvial forest flooded by the River Helme.



Key biodiversity
The site is a migratory bottleneck, where up to 4,000 Grus grus regularly pass. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (5 breeding pairs).



Protected areas
National Partial International High669 ha of IBA covered by Landscape Protected Area (Helmestausee, 1,717 ha). 669 ha of IBA covered by Nature Park (Kyffhäuser, 11,000 ha). IBA overlaps with Nature Reserve. 1,359 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Helmestausee Berga-Kelbra, 1,630 ha). IBA overlaps with Special Protection Area.
