Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A large mountainous area in the Pyrenees encompassing fast-flowing rivers and streams, lakes, forests, moorlands, grasslands and arable land, mountains and cliffs. Human activities include extensive traditional stock-raising. There are major roads into the area, giving easy access for mass tourism.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The site is threatened by intensive forestry, new track construction, extension of a ski-station, and urban expansion.
National Partial
International Partial10,000 ha of IBA covered by National Park (Parc national des Pyrénées, 45,700 ha). 11,000 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Hautes Vallées d'Aspe et d'Ossau, 11,000 ha).
