Site description (2007 baseline):
Site location and context
A tributary of the Kitakamigawa river in Miyagi Prefecture, the Hasamagawa river flows relatively slowly with its low pitched riverbed. Most stream sides are covered with Salix forests, leaving little room for wide riversides. Improvement works have been undertaken since early times in the middle stream of the river, and these improvements have resulted in pebbles, gravel and sand being deposited alongside the river. Outside the urban districts, small villages are scattered in the rice paddy areas. Improvement works in the downstream of the river basin have separated the river into the stream and the surrounding higher dry level areas. Many former fields and paddy fields in the leveled lands have turned into dry grass fields now. Few wet grasslands are found along the river, and growth of forests is hindered in the area.
