Haff Réimech

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2009 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Smew Mergellus albellus LC winter (2000–2009) 5–10 birds C6
Spotted Crake Porzana porzana LC passage (2000–2009) 4–8 birds C6
Eurasian Bittern Botaurus stellaris LC winter (2000–2009) 2–5 birds C6
Common Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus LC breeding (2000–2009) 5–7 males C6
Osprey Pandion haliaetus LC passage (2000–2009) 2–10 birds C6
Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis LC resident (2000–2009) 3–5 pairs C6
Grey-faced Woodpecker Picus canus LC breeding (2000–2009) 2–3 pairs C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2009. The most recent assessment (2009) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2009 good low high
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Smew Mergellus albellus 10 / 10 (birds) 100 good
Ixobrychus minutus 6 / 3 (males) 100 good
Picus canus 3 / 3 (pairs) 100 good
Common Reed-warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus 40 / 30 (pairs) 100 good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Residential and commercial development happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species The conservation measures needed for the site are being comprehensively and effectively implemented high
