Site description (2003 baseline):

Site location and context
This area is dominated by spectacular volcano of Gunung Lewotobi, which has two peaks (Laki-laki (2263 m) and Perempuan (1703 m)) which erupted in 1971, 1972 and 1991(Monk et.al. 1997).



Key biodiversity
This area is one of five of important areas for birds and other biodiversities, and has some of rare bird species in Flores. Flores Green Pigeon Treron flores occured in tropical deciduous dry forest. Yellow-crested Cockatoo occured near the beach (Trainor & Lesmana 2000).



Habitat and land use
There are several types of habitat:- coastal: mangrove, sandy area, caves and rocky coastal area.- Eucalyptus alba savanna (+ 10 km2), probably the only lowland forest in Flores Island (MacKinnon et.al.1982, Jepson & Bowe 1997).- Tropical dry deciduous forest (+ 500 ha) dominated by Tamarindus indica and Terminalia cattapa- Tropical dry semi-evergreen forest ( + 1500 ha)(Trainor & Lesmana 2000)



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Illegal hunting and forest clearence for agriculture/plantation expansion (Trainor & Lesmana 2000).



Protected areas
4200 ha of this area has been proposed as Wildlife Sanctuary on altitude between 500-1704 m (MacKinnon et.al. 1982, Anon 1995b).
