Site description (2000 baseline)
A long, narrow and shallow strait between Lolland and Falster, and a small coastal marsh. Additional habitats (in total less than 10% of the IBA area) include woodlands, arable land, meadows and habitation.
Key biodiversity
Important for wintering waterbirds, with up to four species (Cygnus olor, Aythya ferina, A. fuligula and Mergus merganser) present in internationally important numbers during harsh winters when the total may exceed 20,000 individuals. More recent data than present in the table are available from 1994, but counts cover only half of the IBA.
