Site description (2000 baseline)
An area of steppe and maquis in southern Italy, north-west of the town of Taranto. The site includes the historical town of Matera, and is incised by streams, which have created canyons and gorges. Most of the land is agricultural.

Important numbers of Falco naumanni breed in Matera town.
