Site description (2000 baseline)
A fast-flowing river with pools, marshes, woodland, cultivated and uncultivated land, heathland, cliffs, and reservoirs. Human activities include mining and quarrying.

Key biodiversity
The site is important for passage and breeding raptors. The site is a migratory bottleneck, where more than 3,000 raptors pass on a regular basis (including Pernis apivorus 10,000; Milvus migrans 1,000; Milvus milvus 1,000).
