Site description (1994 baseline):
Site location and context
The site comprises two adjacent areas of freshwater marsh, Gordeh Git and Mamiyand, on the plains 10 km south of Lake Uromiyeh and c.30 km north of Mahabad. Most of the wetland is covered with tall stands of
Phragmites. Land ownership is public.
See box for key species. Breeding birds include
Ciconia ciconia (common summer visitor),
Oxyura leucocephala,
Circus aeruginosus and
Glareola pratincola. Large numbers of wintering waterfowl have been recorded in recent years, and
Chlidonias leucopterus is a common passage migrant.
Non-bird biodiversity: None known to BirdLife International.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Cornwallis (1976) recommended that the boundaries of Lake Uromiyeh National Park be extended to the upper limit of the inundation zone of the lake, thus including the Gordeh Git and Mamiyand marshes. There is no information on threats to the site.
