Site description (2009 baseline)
Located at the south-east edge of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, in the north-eastern part of the Hengduan Shan mountains. The highest peak in the IBA is 7,556 m, and it is surrounded by mountains above 6,000 m. The mountains are covered by snow all year round, with well-developed glaciers. The vegetation cover shows prominent vertical zonation.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected plants include Picea brachytyla and Euptelea pleiospermum. Nationally protected animals include Ailurpoda melanolenca, Pygathrix roxellanae, Panthera pardus, Cervus albirostris, Macaca mulatta, Ailurus fulgens, Felis lynx, Felis temmincki, Moschus berezovskii, Pseudois nayaur, Ovis ammon, Cervus unicolor and Naemorhedus goral.
