Gippsland Lakes

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 2009 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List1 Season Year(s) Size IBA criteria
Musk Duck Biziura lobata LC resident 1975-2003 200-750 individuals A4i
Black Swan Cygnus atratus LC resident 1975-2003 10,000 individuals A4i
Chestnut Teal Anas castanea LC resident 1975-2003 3,730 individuals A4i
Fairy Tern Sternula nereis VU resident 1975-2003 5-80 individuals A1, A4i

1. The current IUCN Red List category. The category at the time of the IBA criteria assessment (2009) may differ.

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2009. The most recent assessment (2019) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2019 unfavourable high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat -

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Marine Coastal/Supratidal moderate (70-90%) moderate (70-90%) unfavourable

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) moderate to rapid deterioration high
Pollution happening now whole area/population (>90%) slow but significant deterioration high
Transportation and service corridors happening now whole area/population (>90%) slow but significant deterioration high
Biological resource use happening now small area/few individuals (<10%) slow but significant deterioration low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected areas Management plan Other action Result
Some of site covered (10-49%) A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species Very little or no conservation action taking place low
