Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
Originally an island, the site has been joined to the mainland by an artificial embankment and roadway, a process that resulted in the partial enclosure and desalinization of Farehammarsviken Bay (the main part of the reserve). The bay is shallow and brackish with a freshwater inflow. It contains areas of marshy vegetation and is surrounded by grazed coastal meadows. In addition to agricultural activities, the IBA supports a bird observatory.
Goose grazing is important in maintaining the open landscape. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Haliaeetus albicilla (wintering) and
Crex crex (passage). Three hundred and twenty species have been recorded at the site.

International HighIBA overlaps with Nature Reserve (Getteron, 360 ha). 340 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Getterön, 340 ha). IBA overlaps with Special Protection Area (344 ha).
