Site description (2001 baseline):
Site location and context
Gangan Forest Reserve, on the southern edge of the Fouta Djalon, is centred on a steep-sided mountain which dominates the town of Kindia, immediately to the south-east. The habitat is wooded savanna and grassland with remnant patches of forest and some areas of cultivation.
See Box and Tables 2 and 3 for key species. In addition, six species of the Sudan–Guinea Savanna biome have been recorded (see Table 3). This is the only IBA in Guinea known to hold
Illadopsis rufescens, here at the western edge of its range
. The area has yet to be thoroughly surveyed.
Non-bird biodiversity: The bromeliad plant Pitcairnia feliciana, endemic to a limited area of Guinea, has been recorded.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The reserve was gazetted in 1942. Threats include harvesting of wood for fuel and construction, as well as clearance for agriculture.
