SY010
Euphrates valley This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 1994 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List1 Season Year(s) Size IBA criteria
Black Francolin Francolinus francolinus LC resident 1976 1 males B2
Marbled Duck Marmaronetta angustirostris NT breeding 1975 1 females A1
Pygmy Cormorant Microcarbo pygmaeus LC non-breeding 1985 frequent A1
Pallid Scops-owl Otus brucei LC resident 1993 present B3
Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus NT winter 1976 2 individuals B2

1. The current IUCN Red List category. The category at the time of the IBA criteria assessment (1994) may differ.

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 1994. The most recent assessment (2018) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2018 very unfavourable very high negligible
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no habitat -

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Shrubland poor (40-69%) poor (40-69%) very unfavourable

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now whole area/population (>90%) very rapid to severe deterioration very high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected areas Management plan Other action Result
Little/none of site covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place negligible
