Site description (2009 baseline):

Site location and context
Located on the boundary between Luding and Tianquan counties, in the central Hengduan Shan mountain ranges. The vegetation shows prominent vertical zonation: on the eastern slope there are broadleaf evergreen forests, broadleaf evergreen and deciduous mixed forest, and coniferous forest; on the western slope, there is a markedly seasonal monsoon climate, with sparse scrub, pine forest and coniferous forest below 1,500 m.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected species include Lesser Panda, Asiatic Black Bear, Serow and Musk Deer.



Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
The IBA is partially protected in a national forest park which was established in 1998. Erlang Shan was designated in 2006 under the World Heritage Convention as part of the ‘Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries World Heritage Site’.
