Epanomi lagoon


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
An almost flat peninsula of low sand-dunes with a lagoon, saltmarsh and Tamarix scrub.



Key biodiversity
This is an important site for wintering ducks and breeding, passage and wintering waders. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Branta ruficollis (up to five wintering individuals), Aythya nyroca (passage).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are from dredging and increased tourism. The area is a candidate SAC.



Protected areas
National High International None450 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Tsairi/Epanomis, 500 ha).
