Eastern Flinders Island

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2009 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Chestnut Teal Anas castanea LC resident (2003–2007) 750–3,100 birds A4i
Pied Oystercatcher Haematopus longirostris LC resident (1990–2008) 137–151 birds A4i
Sooty Oystercatcher Haematopus fuliginosus LC resident (1990–2008) 6–138 birds A4i
Hooded Plover Thinornis cucullatus VU resident (1984–2008) 171 birds A1, A4i
Fairy Tern Sternula nereis VU resident (1999–2008) 12–250 birds A1, A4i

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2009. The most recent assessment (2008) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
