TR060
Eastern Black Sea Mountains This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2004 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Caspian Snowcock Tetraogallus caspius LC breeding (-) 100 pairs A3, B2
Caucasian Grouse Lyrurus mlokosiewiczi NT breeding (-) 553–3,000 birds A1, A2, A3, B2
Velvet Scoter Melanitta fusca VU breeding (-) 5 pairs B1i
Common Crane Grus grus LC breeding (-) 5 pairs B1i

White-winged Snowfinch Montifringilla nivalis LC breeding (-) abundant A3
A4iv Species group - soaring birds/cranes n/a passage (-) 10,000 birds B1iv

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2004. The most recent assessment (2016) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2016 very poor very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) very poor (<40%) very poor (<40%) very poor
Grassland moderate (70–90%) moderate (70–90%) poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications happening now most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Transportation and service corridors happening now most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Residential and commercial development happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Some of area covered (10–49%) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Very little or no conservation action taking place low
