Site location and context
This small (ca. ¾ acre) artificially maintained pond located at N 13 degrees 09' 31.48" W 59 degrees 26' 19.30" is surrounded by grazing land. (This is part of the complex of wetland and contiguous pastureland in the parish of St. Philip.)
This is the only documented nesting location of Caribbean Coot on the island. About 3 or 4 pairs nest here.
Non-bird biodiversity: Not applicable.
Shallow fresh water pond with areas of emergent vegetation, mudflats and open water. The surrounding 4 to 5 acres is grazed by cattle and horses.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Any change in land use.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
This pond is maintained at the residence of a gentleman who also maintains a shooting swamp in the area. No hunting is permitted which makes it a refuge for migrant waterbirds and resident Egrettas.
