East Borden

Site description (2008 baseline):

Site location and context
The East Borden IBA supports at least 1% of the breeding population of Carnaby's Black-Cockatoo, with nesting trees and feeding habitat distributed over two private properties, road reserves and a nature reserve in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The IBA boundaries are defined by known areas of suitable nesting habitat and associated feeding habitat. Future surveys may identify adjacent areas supporting cockatoos that can be included in the IBA at a later time. Food resources for breeding birds include proteaceous plants in native kwongan heath the seeds of weed species such as wild radish and wild geranium. The IBA consists of all suitable native vegetation and isolated nesting trees within the identified area. Pasture, crops, non-native plants and weed populations are not included in the IBA. The area has a Mediterranean climate.

Key biodiversity
General bird survey data are not available for this IBA. The biome-restricted Red-capped Parrot and Rufous Treecreeper have been observed in the IBA (W. Zadow pers. comm. 2009) and other biome-restricted species are likely to occur (C. Gole pers. comm. 2009).

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Exclusion of stock and native herbivores by fencing and weed control around nesting trees and in native vegetation to promote regeneration. Nest competitor control, planting appropriate native food plant species near nesting areas. Mitigation of the effects of rising groundwater and changed hydrological regimes.

Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
The Birds Australia Carnaby's Black-Cockatoo Recovery Project actively works with the landholders to monitor Carnaby's Black-Cockatoo and encourage conservation actions. One private landholder has committed to a nature conservation covenant to protect native vegetation in perpetuity.

Protected areas
The IBA contains Greaves Road Nature Reserve.

Land ownership
Private; state government (Department of Environment and Conservation).
