IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2000 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala EN passage (1996) < 50 birds A1
Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus LC passage (1996) 600–1,000 birds A4i, B1i
Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia LC passage (1996) 300–400 birds A4i, B1i
Dalmatian Pelican Pelecanus crispus NT passage (1996) 50–100 birds A1, A4i, B1i
Pygmy Cormorant Microcarbo pygmaeus LC passage (1996) 200–300 birds A1, A4i, B1i

A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a passage (1996) 70,000–80,000 birds A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2000. The most recent assessment (2008) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2008 good low low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) good (>90%) good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use past (and unlikely to return) and no longer limiting most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Not assessed No management planning has taken place The conservation measures needed for the site are being comprehensively and effectively implemented low
