Desembocadura Río Mataquito This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2019 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Chilean Flamingo Phoenicopterus chilensis NT non-breeding (2015–2019) 5–200 birds B1a
Grey Gull Larus modestus LC non-breeding (2015–2019) 8–500 birds A4, B3a

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2019. The most recent assessment (2019) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2019 poor very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Marine Intertidal moderate (70–90%) moderate (70–90%) poor
Marine Neritic good (>90%) moderate (70–90%) moderate

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Pollution happening now whole of population/area (>90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) very high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Unknown No management planning has taken place Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Marine Intertidal major (>10)
Marine Neritic minor (<10)

Land use

Land use % of IBA
fisheries/aquaculture minor (<10)
tourism/recreation minor (<10)
