Desembocadura del Río Bío-Bío

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2020 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Red-legged Cormorant Poikilocarbo gaimardi NT resident (2016–2020) 2–38 birds B1a
Guanay Cormorant Leucocarbo bougainvilliorum NT resident (2016–2020) 28–3,000 birds B1a
Black Skimmer Rynchops niger LC non-breeding (2016–2020) 1,800 birds A4
Franklin's Gull Larus pipixcan LC non-breeding (2008) 10,000-19,999 birds A4i
Inca Tern Larosterna inca NT non-breeding (2016–2020) 4–28 birds B1a
Elegant Tern Thalasseus elegans NT non-breeding (2016–2020) 10–100 birds A4, B1a

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2020. The most recent assessment (2017) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2017 not assessed high very low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes unset medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Peruvian Pelican Pelecanus thagus 1,538 / 2,000 (birds) 77 moderate
Black Skimmer Rynchops niger 4,500 / 4,500 (birds) 100 good
Franklin's Gull Larus pipixcan 40,000 / 40,000 (birds) 100 good
Elegant Tern Thalasseus elegans 1,800 / 4,030 (birds) 45 poor

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Marine Coastal/Supratidal very poor (<40%) poor (40–69%) very poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Transportation and service corridors happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Pollution past (and unlikely to return) and no longer limiting some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place very low
