Site location and context
The Derventski hills are situated between the Tundzha river and the border with Turkey. They are partly covered by broadleaved deciduous forests of
Quercus and
Carpinus, with Mediterranean trees and shrubs, and there are also open grassy and bushy areas with scattered trees, and arable land. Shrubland is dominated by
Paliurus,
Jasminum and
Nigella. Land-uses are extensive stock-rearing and cultivation, hunting and forestry.
One of the most important breeding sites for
Aquila pomarina in Bulgaria. Significant proportion (³1%) of national population breeding at site:
Circaetus gallicus (1 pair),
Bubo bubo (1 pair),
Dendrocopos medius (min. 3 pairs),
Hippolais olivetorum (min. 2 pairs).
