PL001
Delta of the Swina river

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2010 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Smew Mergellus albellus LC passage (2002) 1,000 birds C2
Goosander Mergus merganser LC passage (2002) 12,000 birds C3
Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo LC winter (2004–2009) 8,000–14,300 birds C3
Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata NT passage (2000–2009) 96 birds C1
Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola VU breeding (2009) 11–12 males C1
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a winter (2002–2008) 35,000 birds C4

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2010. The most recent assessment (2010) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2010 good very high very low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola 11 / 11 (males) 100 good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now whole of population/area (>90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) very high
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Natural system modifications happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Pollution happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Residential and commercial development happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) low
Transportation and service corridors happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
