Site description (2002 baseline)
Dehtáø pond is one of the largest ponds in Southern Bohemia. It is situated in the Èeskobudìjovickápond plateau formed from Quarternary sediments, in the midst of extensive agricultural land not far from the forested umava foothills. The pond lies in a shallow depression of the terrain and is surrounded by narrow belts of littoral vegetation receding to surrounding grassland and further to arable land. Also surrounding the pond are stands of bush communities with a majority of willows and patches of woods dominated by pines and oaks. At two places near the pond bank there are dozens of weekend houses. The pond itself is used for intensive fish farming. The water level often changes and the pond is left dryfor up to several months in the autumn of every other year due to fish harvesting. The water levelis also usually lower the year after the harvest. The bare bed of the pond and areas with shallowwater are overgrown with low vegetation. The eastern part of the pond is, especially in the summer, used for recreation (swimming, boating, and windsurfing), yet the western part is relatively undisturbed throughout the whole year. Thus, the western part is an ideal site for waterbirds thanks to its size and the pattern of the terrain surrounding it.

Key biodiversity
The IBA is important for both breeding and passage waterbirds, and wintering raptors. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (2-4 wintering birds).
