Site description (2003 baseline)
This area is a seasonal lakes that spread on floodplain in the middle of Ogan River and Komering (Musi river tributary). During the rainy season, water level between 4-5 m above the dry season level, which cover between 5000 ha on August up to 500000 ha on February. The swamp area was covered by forest and has gone, probably because of El Nino storm in 1960s and 1970s, and now secondary forest of Melaleuca present in this area.

Key biodiversity
Total number of waterbirds in this area estimated up to 100000 birds, and the habitat is important for 12 species of herons and egrets, mainly Javan Pond-heron Ardeola speciosa, Intermediate Egret Egretta intermedia, Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis and Purple Heron Ardea purpurea. Lebak-Teluk Tomang is predicted as the breeding site for more than 1000 pairs of Javan Pond-heron Ardeola speciosa. Lebak Pampengan is the only area in Sumatra (also in western Indonesia) as the breeding site of White-headed Stilt Himantopus leucocephalus, but it need to be confirmed whether it is regular or incidental. Bronze-winged Jacana Metopidius indicus not found in this area by Verheugt et.al. (1993), although the bird habitat present in this area.
