Côte de Zerkine et El Grine

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2010 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus LC winter (1992–2009) 120–4,000 birds A4i
Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia LC winter (1992–2009) 9–600 birds A4i
Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo LC winter (-) 10,000–12,000 birds A4i
Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis LC winter (-) 2,000–6,000 birds A4i
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a winter (-) min 20,000 birds A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2010. The most recent assessment (2009) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2009 very poor medium medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no population medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus 2,500 / 1,325 (birds) 100 good
Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia 100 / 120 (birds) 84 moderate
Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo 37 / 10,000 (birds) 1 very poor
A4iii Species group - waterbirds 8,000 / 20,000 (birds) 40 poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Climate change and severe weather likely in long term (>4 years) most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Some limited conservation initiatives are in place medium
