Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A large reservoir created on the Danube, on the Romanian/Yugoslavian border (adjacent to Ðerdap gorge, Yugoslavian site 034). The shores are steep and predominantly rocky; deciduous scrub and small areas of grassland dominate the slopes. Reedbeds (
Phragmites) are present in the upper part of the reservoir.
The IBA lies on an important flyway between the Pannonian plain and the Balkan peninsula, and is an important staging post for migrating waterbirds. The site holds 20,000 or more wintering waterbirds on a regular basis.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Ship traffic poses a threat (`Other' threat). Fishing and hunting activities have minimal impact on birds due to the large area of the reservoir. A management plan exists for the area.
