Site description (2009 baseline):
Site location and context
Lies on the northern shore of Chongming Dao Island, with wide tidal flats created by sedimentation from the slow-flowing northern section of the Yangtze Estuary. The area is attractive to large flocks of ducks and shorebirds because it is remote and human disturbance is low. Construction of a dyke began in 2003 between the middle of the tidal flat and Xinglong Sha (also known as Huanggua Sha), and formed an artificial lagoon that is called Bei Hu (North Lake) by local people. This has led to increased sedimentation in Bei Hu and to the east of the dyke. When a new bridge connecting Qidong City in Jiangsu Province and Chongming Dao is completed in 2010, it is anticipated that human disturbance and development pressure will increase.
Non-bird biodiversity: No information.
