Site description (2024 baseline):
Site location and context
The site consists of shallow open waters on the southern / south-western coast of the Åland mainland in the Baltic Sea.
An increasingly important wintering area for ducks, such as Goldeneye, Smew and Tufted Duck. Due to climate change, more and more birds winter in the archipelago of south-western Finland.
The key areas are bays and shallow open seas with small islets. The area is used for regular ship traffic and plenty of recreational activities, there are also several wind farms.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Regular ship traffic is likely to threat the wintering birds. Also offshore wind farms may affect the quality of the wintering habitats in the future.
