Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A stretch of coast comprising mudflats and sandflats, sand and shingle-beaches, rock stacks and brackish standing water. High levels of industrial activity occur adjacent to the northern tip of the site.
The most important area on Gran Canaria for wintering and migrating birds, especially herons and waders.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Tourist activity (for example, cars being driven on beaches and windsurfing), illegal hunting, fishing and industrial activity cause disturbance and destroy habitats. The building of a new commercial harbour in Arinaga will have a high impact on littoral dynamics. The section of the site that runs from Arinaga saltplant to Formas Bay is a game reserve.
