Ciocăneşti - Dunăre

Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A fish-farm that comprises c.12 ponds surrounded by dykes and canals, situated in the Danube valley. Narrow reedbeds (Phragmites) fringe the ponds; the total area of open water is 220 ha. Pasture, arable fields and Populus plantations form the surrounds.

Key biodiversity
This is an important feeding area for waterbirds breeding at Sreberna reserve (Bulgaria), in riverine forest along the Danube and at other wetland sites. It is also an important stop-over site during spring and autumn migration. Passage species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Branta ruficollis, Aythya nyroca, Haliaeetus albicilla and Gallinago media.

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Piscivorous birds, particularly Phalacrocorax carbo, are driven away with gunshots and are sometimes killed. In late autumn the water is drained from the majority of the ponds until early spring˜it is not a suitable site for wintering waterbirds. A management plan exists for the site.
