IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 1998 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus LC non-breeding (-) 1,991–3,522 birds A4i
Lesser Flamingo Phoeniconaias minor NT non-breeding (-) common A1
Wattled Crane Bugeranus carunculatus VU non-breeding (-) present A1
Blue Crane Anthropoides paradiseus VU non-breeding (-) present A1
Southern Bald Ibis Geronticus calvus NT non-breeding (-) 80–100 birds A1, A4i
Black-winged Pratincole Glareola nordmanni NT winter (-) 5,000 birds A1, A4i
Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni LC winter (-) 1,000–5,000 birds A1, A4ii
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a non-breeding (-) min 20,000 birds A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 1998. The most recent assessment (2012) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2012 very poor high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus 250 / 4,047 (birds) 7 not assessed
Lesser Flamingo Phoeniconaias minor 10,000 / 10,565 (birds) 95 good
Wattled Crane Bugeranus carunculatus 0 / 10 (birds) 0 very poor
Blue Crane Anthropoides paradiseus 5 / 200 (birds) 3 very poor
Blue Bustard Eupodotis caerulescens 23 / 80 (birds) 29 very poor
Southern Bald Ibis Geronticus calvus 120 / 100 (birds) 100 good
Black-winged Pratincole Glareola nordmanni 5,000 / 5,000 (birds) 100 not assessed
Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni 0 / 5,000 (birds) 0 not assessed
A4iii Species group - waterbirds 13,577 / 21,462 (birds) 64 not assessed

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Grassland moderate (70–90%) poor (40–69%) very poor
Wetlands (inland) moderate (70–90%) poor (40–69%) very poor

Pollution happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Energy production and mining likely in short term (<4 years) most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low
