Chongming Dongtan Nature Reserve


Site description (2009 baseline):

Site location and context
The nature reserve is located in the eastern part of Chongming Dao island, on the boundary of Chongming County, 40 km north-east of Shanghai City. Chongming Dao island is 76 km by 15 km, and was formed by siltation from sediment carried by the Yangtze River, and it is still growing eastwards by 130-140 m annually. The major habitat in the IBA is inter-tidal mudflats.

Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as a provincial-level nature reserve (32,610 ha) in 1998. The reserve was designated in 2002 as a ‘Wetland of International Importance’ (or Ramsar site) under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
