Cholhyns'kyj zakaznyk This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2002 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('key species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Eurasian Bittern Botaurus stellaris LC passage (2000) 100 individuals B2
Common Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus LC passage (2000) 100 individuals B2
Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax LC passage (2000) 100 individuals B2
Sedge Warbler Acrocephalus schoenobaenus LC passage (2000) 1,000–2,500 individuals B3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2002. The most recent assessment (2017) is shown below.

IBA conservation status
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2017 very unfavourable very high not assessed
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the key species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Sedge Warbler Acrocephalus schoenobaenus 75 / 1,750 (breeding pairs) 5 very unfavourable

Pressure (threats to the key species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Climate change and severe weather happening now whole population/area (>90%) moderate deterioration (10–30% in 3 generations) very high
Natural system modifications happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate deterioration (10–30% in 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow deterioration (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
