Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
The mouth of a small river in a small bay on the Black Sea coast. There is a sand beach and a mudflat, a large area of reedbeds of
Phragmites,
Typha and
Schoenoplectus, and secondary broadleaved woodland on the nearby slopes.
The site is of global importance for
Numenius tenuirostris on passage and in winter, and is one of the most important sites in the country for breeding
Phalacrocorax pygmeus and
Plegadis falcinellus. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Pelecanus crispus (common on passage). Significant proportion (³1%) of national population breeding at site:
Ixobrychus minutus (2-3 pairs).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Illegal hunting occurs in the protected area. People and nearby road traffic disturb birds during the breeding season.
