Site description (1994 baseline)
Cheghakhor (Chogakhor) Marsh lies in the upper drainage of the Karun river on a broad grassy plain at c.2,100 m in the central Zagros Mountains, c.95 km west of Shahreza. It is a permanent freshwater marsh which floods in winter and spring, but by late summer much of it is dry and the remainder is almost entirely overgrown with emergent vegetation. The vegetation is Phragmites and Typha beds surrounded by sedge. Large portions of the adjacent grassy plains are cultivated with wheat. Land ownership is public.
Key biodiversity
See box for key species. An important wintering area for Casmerodius albus, Anas platyrhynchos (up to 6,700) and Aythya nyroca. Marmaronetta angustirostris has been recorded recently.
